29 May What It’s Like to Join a Nonprofit Board (And Why You Might Want To) May 29, 2025By Will Strohl | 2 MIN READ Ever wondered what it’s like to serve on a nonprofit board—or how to find the right one for you? Here’s what I’ve learned as a first-time board member with the Community Foundation of San Carlos. Joining a nonprofit board wasn’t always on my radar. As someone focused on running Upendo Ventures and building technology solutions for clients, I didn’t imagine myself stepping into the nonprofit world—until the opportunity to join the Community Foundation of San Carlos came up. I’ve since learned that being on a board can be an incredibly fulfilling way to support causes you care about, while also learning and growing in new ways. And now, I’m actively encouraging others to explore board service too. Common Questions About Joining a Board How do I know what board is right for me? Start with what excites you. What causes spark your interest? What community challenges do you want to be part of solving? If you’re genuinely passionate about the mission, contributing your time and skills becomes a lot more meaningful—and enjoyable. What kind of time commitment should I expect? This can vary greatly. Some boards are heavily hands-on with regular activities and events, while others may only meet a few times a year. Always ask ahead of time so you can align your capacity with their expectations. What will they want me to do? Boards usually look for help in areas like fundraising, governance, outreach, or specialized skills like finance or marketing. Ask them what their biggest needs are—and be honest about what you can offer. Should I volunteer first? Yes. It’s a great way to test the waters. You’ll get a feel for the board’s dynamics, values, and working style. And you’ll quickly learn if the fit is right for you. Why It Matters At Upendo Ventures, we talk a lot about designing systems and solutions that help people thrive. Serving on a board is another way of applying that same principle—but for the good of the entire community. If you’re thinking about joining a board, let this be your sign. Get involved. Ask questions. Raise your hand. Your local nonprofits need your leadership more than ever. Let’s Chat! Curious about board service or how Upendo Ventures supports our community? Let’s talk.
