The Employee You Forgot You Had

Your website is your forgotten employee-Here's how to change that

Imagine this: You’ve just brought on a rockstar employee. Let’s call them Alex. They’re sharp, reliable, never call in sick, and seem to be working at all hours of the day without complaining. Sounds like a dream, right?

Your Website is Your Hardest-Working Employee

It’s always on. It doesn’t sleep. It doesn’t take sick days. It’s often the first thing people see when they discover your business—and it shapes their perception in seconds.

But here’s the truth: you can’t just build a website and walk away. If it’s part of your growth engine, it deserves to be held accountable like anyone else on your team.

  • Do we have clear goals for what the website is supposed to do?
  • How are we measuring those goals?
  • Is anything preventing us from reaching those goals faster or more often?
  • When was the last time we updated the site’s content, design, or features to reflect our current priorities?

If you don’t know the answers—or haven’t checked in lately—your website might not be contributing the way it could.

Your Website Has a Salary—Make It Count

As a business owner or executive leader, you’re already investing in your site:

  • Monthly hosting and tools
  • The initial design or build (and maybe a redesign… years ago)
  • Marketing efforts to drive traffic
  • Your own time managing or troubleshooting it
  • Lost opportunities when prospects bounce or don’t convert

If it’s not producing meaningful results, it’s time to ask why—and do something about it.

How to Give Your Website a Quick Performance Review

If you're unsure where to begin, here’s a simple 3-part framework any business leader can use today:

1. Job Description

Ask: What is my website supposed to be doing?

  • Generating leads
  • Educating visitors
  • Showcasing services or products
  • Reducing support requests
  • Converting interest into action

2. Performance Metrics

Check:

  • Website traffic and most-viewed pages
  • Bounce rate and average time on site
  • Conversion rates (forms, calls, downloads)
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Load speed, especially on mobile

Tip: If you haven’t looked at your site’s analytics in over three months, now’s the time.

3. Coaching Plan

You don’t need to start from scratch. Instead, look for small, smart upgrades:

  • Refresh outdated content or visuals
  • Add strong, clear calls-to-action (CTAs)
  • Streamline confusing navigation
  • Fix broken links and outdated info
  • Audit for accessibility and modern SEO best practices

Just like any employee, your website benefits from occasional coaching and investment.

We See This All the Time

At Upendo Ventures, we work with small business leaders who are doing everything they can—but their website often gets left behind.

It’s not your fault. You’re busy running the business. But your website shouldn’t just be another line item—it should be one of your highest performers.

Let’s work together to make sure your site is doing the job you’re already paying it to do—and helping your business grow every day.
