When Your Browser Betrays You: A Lesson in Safeguarding Your Work This week I lost nearly half a day of productivity to something we think will never happen DID happen — Google Chrome decided to forget my browser sessions. Just like that. What happened? Everything was working fine. I decided to reboot my computer. As one might do after thant, I opened Chrome. To my horror, I discovered that all three of my Chrome profiles had wiped themselves clean. Now, to be fair, two out of the three profiles did eventually restore, but it wasn’t simple. I had to log back into each one, go through multi-factor authentication, re-authenticate my extensions, and rebuild my browser sessions. THREE TIMES!!! Yes, three times! That took a good chunk of time on its own. The third profile was worse. All I got back were the extensions. No open tabs, no windows. Nothing. I had to dig through my browser history and manually open everything again. That’s time I’ll never get back — and I don’t want you to lose it either. What I Learned (and should have remembered) Chrome is not bulletproof. It doesn’t matter how reliable it seems, it can crash or reset without warning. History isn’t enough. You’ll get a list of sites, but not the session structure you need to rebuild quickly. There’s no “official fix.” I tried everything — Google’s help docs, forums, even ChatGPT — but at the end of the day, the problem was an anomaly I couldn’t solve. A Simple Safeguard The best solution I found is prevention. There are free extensions that will automatically save your browsing sessions and give you a way to restore them if Chrome ever fails you: Session Buddy – Saves and organizes your sessions so you can bring them back anytime. Better History – Lets you view and restore from history in a more structured way. A Note on Free Tools Here’s the trade-off: if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product. That means your data is almost certainly being collected and used in some way. If you’re comfortable with that, these tools can be lifesavers. If you’re not, the alternative is to keep your own manual backups or look for paid software that protects your privacy. Takeaway for Small Business Owners We put so much trust in the tools we use every day — but even something as “safe” as your browser isn’t guaranteed. If losing half a day of work would be painful for your business (and it usually is), spend a few minutes now installing one of these safeguards. It’s not about fear. It’s about being proactive. Getting the Most Out of Your Google Analytics DNN Integration Google Analytics is often taken-for-granted in too many ways.
