10 July When Google Ghosts You: The Wake-Up Call That Sparked Our Marketing Overhaul July 10, 2025By Will Strohl | 2 MIN READ For years, Upendo Ventures thrived almost exclusively through word-of-mouth referrals—particularly in a specific sector of the market that knew us well and trusted us deeply. And for a long time, that was more than enough. We were never hurting for new work, and the flywheel kept spinning. The Cold, Hard Truth: Google Hadn’t Visited Since 2019 We ran an audit on our own digital footprint—something we regularly do for our Clients, but embarrassingly, hadn’t done for ourselves in years. And what we discovered was shocking, even for seasoned professionals like us. Google hadn’t crawled our website since 2019!! PRO TIP: How did we know that? One of the first things you should do when launching your website is to connect it to Google's Search Console tool. It gives you a lot of data to make marketing decisions. Let me say that again: We build, secure, and optimize websites for a living. And even we let our site sit untouched long enough that Google stopped caring. It was a jarring but valuable reminder: if you don’t treat your own business like a Client, no one else will either. What We Did About It In March, we flipped the switch. We treated ourselves like our best Client. We did all the things we’d normally recommend (and implement) for others: Audited and updated key website content Added several new pages to close messaging gaps Created a long-term editorial calendar for blogging Re-engaged with social media and content distribution Updated metadata, improved accessibility, and reviewed technical SEO The Most Important Lesson: Content Still Runs Everything I’ve been doing this professionally since 2001. I’ve seen Google’s algorithm change more times than I can count. I’ve seen SEO fads come and go. I’ve seen entire industries shift. But one thing remains true, no matter what: Content still runs everything. Always has, always will (for the foreseeable future, at least). The algorithm has always favored one consistent signal above all else: “Is this site still alive, and is it still relevant?” And the best way to answer that with a yes is to keep your content updated. If You’re Not Creating or Updating Content, Here’s What Google Might Think: You’re no longer relevant — Why recommend your site if it’s outdated or neglected? You’re not open for business — A stale website can give the impression that your business no longer exists. You don’t want new business — And if you don’t care, why should anyone else? It’s not personal. These are just the decision trees and logic loops search engines use. AI may look “smart,” but it’s still just following signals. If you’re not actively sending those signals, you’re invisible. What Changed? Everything. After just a few months of effort, we were able to confirm that Google is now visiting our site every other day—a dramatic improvement from once every 6–7 years. That’s what happens when you flip the lights back on and start inviting people in. So here’s your takeaway: If it’s been a while since you updated your site, blogged, or added something new… now’s the time. You don’t need to overhaul everything. A small update once a month—a blog post, a refreshed service description, even updated testimonials—can go a long way. If Google isn’t visiting your website, it might be because you haven’t either. When the average company thinks about Google Analytics, they simply ensure their Google Analytics code is in place and they keep track of what I refer to as vanity metrics. Copy. Paste. Done, right? Vanity metrics are quite deceiving, to be honest, and you’re only scratching the surface with what you could (and probably should) be doing with Google Analytics. In this article, we’re going to discuss how to dive deeper into your Google Analytics integration to grow your business. The Difference Between Sales and Marketing in the Internet Age I have been hearing this classic debate since my business school classes thirty years ago and it still rages today – “What is the difference between sales and marketing?” It seems that everyone is still confused, and nobody likes any of the answers given. Perhaps because all the answers seem to disagree with each other. But we still have to ask question …. CMS State of the Union: Data-Based Insights From the Past Two Years If you didn’t already know, CMS is an acronym for “content management system.” A CMS is used by many developers, consultancies, and companies to build their website. It’s an incredibly common thing to do, as any flavor of CMS you choose will always save you effort and money, compared to building a website from nothing. This is especially true if you look at the lifetime investment of your website. Using a CMS framework or solution of some kind just seems to make sense. After all, this is what I’ve built my own career upon since 2001. However, then, CMS was known as a portal or portal framework. That’s a long time ago, so it’s not a bad idea to take stock of things every now and thing to see if what you’re doing is the correct thing. To this end, I asked myself, “How is CMS doing right now, and does it make sense to still be doing CMS-related work in the future?” Using Google Alerts To Monitor and Grow Your Brand One of the number one things I speak about with clients is brand, or branding. In fact, when embarking on any project, internal or external, it’s probably the very first thing that we discuss. This is especially true with small businesses and businesses who need to employ local and social media marketing strategies. You need to first know what your brand is, how to speak about your brand (with as few words as possible), and how people should perceive your brand. Most importantly, what will people say about your brand when you’re not looking? Your Website Is Never Done – It’s a Core Process, Not a Project (and that's a good thing) Your website isn’t “done.” In fact, it will never be. When implemented well, a website will be in a constant state of innovation, progress, and improvement because that is the natural state of every healthy business. And ultimately, your website is a representation of your business. Adding Universal Google Analytics to DNN 9.1 Configuring your Google Analytics in previous versions of DNN was super simple. You would just navigate to the Google Analytics page and paste in your Google Analytics tracking ID. Since DNN 9 was released, some of the administration that was easily accessible is yet to be added back to the administration area. This article will help you to enable and update Google Analytics to use the most current version, universal analytics. This is important since the default version of Google Analytics is using DoubleClick. You can blame me for that since I submitted that pull request, but it was the current at the time…
