11 August 3 Easy Ways to Tell if Your Website is Beating the Competition August 11, 2025By Will Strohl | 2 MIN READ The truth is, your website isn’t just a digital brochure — it’s your 24/7 salesperson. And if it’s not helping you win customers, it’s helping your competitors instead. Imagine this — a potential customer is looking for exactly what you offer. They grab their phone, type a quick search, and… they end up calling your competitor. Why? Because their website showed up first, looked more professional, and made it ridiculously easy to take action. The good news? You don’t need to be a tech whiz to figure out if your site is outperforming theirs. Here are three quick, free, and easy checks you can do right now to see where you stand. 1. Search for Your Business Like a Customer Would Put yourself in the shoes of someone who has never heard of you but is looking for what you sell. Go to Google and type in your product or service followed by your city — for example, “plumber San Carlos” or “cupcake bakery near me.” Now, pay attention to what you see: Are you showing up on the first page of results? Do your competitors have eye-catching listings with great photos, lots of reviews, or better headlines? Would you click on your listing, or does another one look more appealing? If you can’t find yourself without scrolling, your customers probably can’t either — and that’s a problem. 2. Compare First Impressions Open your website and a competitor’s site side-by-side. Pretend you’ve never seen either one before. Within the first five seconds ask yourself: Which one feels more modern and professional? Which one loads faster? (Yes, speed matters — slow sites lose visitors fast.) Is it immediately clear what each business does, and why someone should choose them? First impressions online work exactly like in real life — they happen fast and they stick. If your competitor’s site feels cleaner, clearer, and more inviting, customers may never give you a second chance. 3. Check How Easy It Is to Take Action Even if someone loves what they see, your website still has one job: get them to take the next step. That could be calling you, booking an appointment, requesting a quote, or buying directly online. Look at your homepage (and key pages) and ask: Is it obvious what I want visitors to do next? Do I have clear, visible buttons like “Call Now” or “Request a Quote”? Is the process quick and simple, or do they have to hunt around for contact info? Now, compare this to your competitors. If they make it easier — or more enticing — to get started, they may be converting the customers who would have chosen you. Closing & Call to Action Doing these three quick checks won’t turn you into a marketing expert overnight, but they will give you a clear idea of whether your website is winning you customers or quietly losing them. If you discover you’re falling behind, don’t panic — you don’t have to rebuild your site from scratch to make a big difference. Small changes can create a huge impact in how you show up online and how often visitors choose you over your competition. And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s where we come in. A Website is Never “Done”: 5 Reasons You Should Never Start Ignoring Your Business’s Website Your website isn’t like a printed brochure — it doesn’t have a “final version.” It’s a living, breathing part of your business that works for you 24/7… or at least it should. From Squarespace Site to Growth Engine: Why It’s Time to Level Up Your Website When you first launched your business, your website only had one job: exist. You needed something quick, affordable, and easy to update—just enough to prove you were real. Platforms like Squarespace and Wix made that possible. Your Website Is Never Done – It’s a Core Process, Not a Project (and that's a good thing) Your website isn’t “done.” In fact, it will never be. When implemented well, a website will be in a constant state of innovation, progress, and improvement because that is the natural state of every healthy business. And ultimately, your website is a representation of your business. Measure Everything on Your Website – But Start at the Top But we live in a world where you rarely have all the information you need to make those kinds of decisions by the time that you have to make them. So how do you balance your company’s need for constant innovation and experimentation against the imperative of ensuring that you are always moving your business forward and never backward? The answer is “measurement.” Mobile Friendly Business Websites … It’s More Than Responsive Design Once you have a responsive business website, you are only half-way done. To ensure that your site is mobile-friendly you need to think about mobile every time you make content to put on your website. By always “thinking mobile” you will change the way you choose and edit images, it will influence the way you write, and it will naturally limit the complexity and number of widgets and apps that you use.
